We’ve had some beautiful weather the last couple of days so my daughter and I took advantage of one particularly sunny day after school.
I gave her the option of a couple hiking trails we could check out and, since she’s not a huge fan of hiking (or at least that’s what she says…but always ends up having a great time), she picked one we had never been on before. On the way there, we passed a duck pond she used to frequent with her grandparents and we decided that was a better option. A quick stop at Target for a loaf of bread and we were enjoying the weather in no time.
There is nothing particularly special about this pond. It’s not huge, it sits next to a hospital so there’s not a lot of scenery other than the lake itself, and the ducks weren’t even present at the DUCK pond, but we had the best time. We walked the entire path around the water, stopping every so often to throw some bread in for a turtle (or 5) whose sunbathing we interrupted. We laughed, we talked, we stopped on the bridge and were surprised at the amount of fish that came out of nowhere to eat, we sat in the grass and sang songs together…it was perfect. Total cost: $1.25 for the bread.
We live in a world that is so driven by commercials. We’re constantly being pushed towards products, movies, theme parks, video games, events….. but all our kids really need is our attention. Some of the best times I’ve had with my daughter this year have cost nothing but a little time.
Don’t wait for the right moment to enjoy your kids. You think life is short…think about how short childhood is. Enjoy it while you can.
